A fond farewell to Lou…

1st October 2025

Louise Wynne-Williams or ‘Lou’ volunteered in the warehouse in its various homes for nearly 10 years until her recent “retirement” in January – and then her very unexpected death in March. Unable to attend her funeral (elsewhere), we gathered together to share stories and celebrate her life. And what a life! The word which cropped up in most tributes was “big” ……………….. a tall lady, with a big heart for others (especially in issues of justice),a big and infectious laugh and an vast vocabulary and incredible knowledge on so many varied subjects. Her job history was fascinating, with some very unusual and prestigious jobs. She had lived all over the world and had had a life full of adventure and contrasts. But that background underpinned, rather than limited, her wish to champion many issues with local councillors for better facilities for local residents, including insisting that the incumbent councillor visited foodbank in order to better understand the needs of our clients.

She was fearless to go up against anyone to get what she needed for others. She took great interest in all those she worked and volunteered with – proven by the lengths to which various friends have gone to seek out B30 and South B’ham Foodbank to ensure we knew of her death and to facilitate donations in Lou’s memory. She would ask after our families and concerns, each time we met to “bag pack”, playing down any concerns of her own. Her advice was wise and varied, shared with real empathy. When asked how she was, the reply was pretty standard: “well, I’m vertical”, said with a big smile.  Lou, we will all miss you – but are each much the greater for having shared your life.
